My daughter explained to me yesterday that she has the “cant’s.” At 26-years-old, she is suddenly stuck in a universe where every thought quickly turns into an internal rebuttal as to why she can’t change her job, start a new business, or go back to school. My easy mom advice was to encourage her to write down what she can do. She laughed and said, “That will only give me a longer list of what I can’t do.” Now that’s stuck.
When we suffer from the “cant’s” there is a deeper force inside of us that does not want to move forward. We may be afraid of exposure, loss, success, or change. We may not be ready to give up a desire or dream, or we might need to develop an internal resource more fully until we are ready to move forward.
Being stuck is not always a bad thing. It’s a time to let go, relax, and reset expectations. A time to ask ourselves what we really want to do. What it’s too late to do. And what it’s not time to do. The dormant season will eventually change. Patience grasshopper. Good things still come to those who can wait.
