One of my most popular posts this year was about women helping women in the workplace. Even though I still hear women telling me that our sisters don’t help us move ahead in our careers, I am going to be steadfast that this is a myth that should be dispelled. Here is another great example.

In the 1950’s, when the black artist and iconic pop singer Ella Fitzgerald was starting her career she was unable to get a booking at an important Los Angeles nightclub. Marilyn Monroe heard of this atrocity against race and gender and made a call to the owner of the club. She promised to sit at the front table every night if he allowed Ella to sing. The owner hired Ella and Marilyn was true to her promise. The press packed the club and Ella was an overnight sensation. “After that,” Ella remembers,”I never had to play a small jazz club again.”

So enough already that we don’t help each other. Let’s start spreading the word that we do. Share an example of a woman who helped you believe in yourself, or who gave you an opportunity to further express your talents. We create our own stories ladies. Let’s re-write this one!

Thank you so much for starting this conversation. We women can do anything we set our minds to. Better yet, do something that helps another woman. I have 112 employees. 94 of them are women. 74 of them are stay at home “working” Moms. This is not an accident – it is intentional. We have so much power to do so much good for other people.
