It’s the holidays once again. For those of us that like to please others this time of year can be particularly stressful. The word “yes” just keeps popping out of our mouth. We agree to help with the office party and the school play; to take our parents gift shopping or do it for them; and we accept four more invitations than we want to attend.

Before we know it, we’re too tired, sick, or overwhelmed to live up to our commitments. Our desire to help others turns into a sinking feeling of guilt when out of sheer exhaustion we have to beg out of a prior commitment.

If this describes you, consider giving yourself a gift this year.  Make your health and well-being at least as important as everybody else’s requests and desires. Less “yeses” means more presence. And after all, that’s the real gift.
